About Holbæk

The story of Holbæk

Holbæk, a city in the northwestern part of Region Sjælland, Denmark, offers a distinctive blend of historical depth, natural beauty, and contemporary culture. It rests on the banks of Holbæk Fjord, an inlet of the larger Isefjord, serving as a commercial and industrial heart for the surrounding area. Its active commercial seaport facilitates ferry access to the island of Orø, and a substantial marina welcomes recreational boaters.

The city's allure stems from its harmonious blend of historic architecture, verdant landscapes, and a lively harbor scene. Holbæk provides a tranquil setting with ample discoveries, from exploring local history to enjoying a peaceful retreat. It is a place that emphasizes convenience, safety, and authentic experiences, making it suitable for families and those seeking unique local encounters.

Holbæk is well-connected by train and road to Copenhagen and other major cities, making it easy to combine a relaxing holiday with excursions further afield. Whether you are interested in browsing local markets for Danish crafts, enjoying seaside picnics, or engaging in outdoor activities, Holbæk offers a memorable experience.

History

From Medieval Stronghold to Modern Hub

Holbæk's origins can be traced back to the late 12th century, first appearing in official documents in 1199. At this time, it was known as Holbækgaard, a significant farm belonging to a nobleman. The city's development accelerated in 1236 when Valdemar the Victorious laid the groundwork for Holbæk Castle. This strategic move solidified Holbæk's importance, and it was granted township rights in 1286.

The name 'Holbæk' itself has two prevailing theories for its origin. It could be a paraphrase of 'Den hule bæk,' referring to a hollow brook that ran through the city in the Middle Ages, or it could mean 'The Sacred Stream.' The city's first seal, created around 1400, depicted three trees by the water, a prominent feature still present in the current seal, reflecting its close relationship with the fjord.

Throughout the centuries, Holbæk's castle played a significant role, serving as a protective stronghold and administrative center. However, the castle was destroyed by Swedish troops in 1659 and was never rebuilt. Despite this, Holbæk continued to evolve as a market town and port. The local museum, founded in 1910, now preserves much of this history, with many of its 13 historic buildings dating from the 17th to 19th centuries standing in their original locations.

In recent decades, Holbæk has experienced significant growth, becoming one of Denmark's fastest-growing major cities in the 2000s. Urban development and renewal projects, such as the transformation of the former iron foundry site, have contributed to its dynamic character, blending robust industrial history with modern design. Today, Holbæk remains a spirited commercial and cultural center, balancing its deep past with a forward-looking perspective.

What to see

Begin your exploration at the Holbæk Museum, a collection of historic buildings, some dating back to the 1660s. Here, you can delve into local life from the Stone Age to the present, and even try an escape room challenge. Afterwards, wander through the Old Apothecary's Garden, a tranquil botanical space filled with herbs and plants.

For art enthusiasts, Holbæk offers a distinctive experience with Holbæk Art, an ongoing project that has transformed the city's walls into an open-air gallery with over 37 murals by various artists. Do not miss Æglageret (The Egg Warehouse), an unusual museum dedicated to the art and cultural history of decorated eggs from around the world.
