The chosen site, once known as Brass Ranch, a 3,200-acre sheep farm, was acquired for approximately $4 per acre. Construction of the resort began in May 1936, and in a remarkable seven months, the Sun Valley Lodge opened its doors on December 21, 1936. Publicist Steve Hannagan, instrumental in shaping the resort's identity, coined the name "Sun Valley" and its initial tagline: "Winter sports under a summer sun."

Hannagan's marketing brilliance extended to inviting Hollywood luminaries, offering complimentary ski vacations to A-list celebrities. Figures such as Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, Lucille Ball, and Ernest Hemingway journeyed to Sun Valley, solidifying its glamorous reputation. The resort also innovated the modern ski experience with the installation of the world's first chairlifts on Dollar and Proctor Mountains in 1936, a design inspired by banana conveyor systems.

During World War II, the resort temporarily closed, serving as a convalescent hospital for the U.S. Navy, before reopening to the public in December 1946. Over the decades, Sun Valley has continued its evolution, with expansions to Bald Mountain and ongoing commitments to enhancing the skier experience.
