Leavenworth's story begins not with German heritage, but with the indigenous Wenatchi, Yakama, and Chinook tribes, who for centuries hunted deer and elk and fished for salmon in the Icicle Creek and Wenatchee River. The area, originally known as Icicle Flats, saw its first homesteaders arrive in 1885. The arrival of the Great Northern Railway in 1893 transformed it into a flourishing timber community, and the town was officially incorporated in 1906, named after Portland-based land investor Charles Leavenworth.

However, Leavenworth's prosperity was short-lived. In the 1920s, the Great Northern Railway relocated its operations, rerouting tracks and bypassing the town. This, coupled with the closure of lumber mills, plunged Leavenworth into economic decline, with its population dwindling by the 1950s. In the early 1960s, community leaders, recognizing the town was on the brink of extinction, devised a bold plan: to reinvent Leavenworth as a Bavarian village.

This initiative, known as 'Project LIFE' (Leavenworth Improvement For Everyone), involved the entire community. Inspired by merchants who began remodeling their properties in the Bavarian style, and with the guidance of German-born architect Heinz Ulbricht, downtown Leavenworth underwent a dramatic transformation starting in 1964. The project was a success, drawing national attention and earning Leavenworth an All-America City Award in 1967. The transformation also led to the creation of popular festivals like the Autumn Leaf Festival, Maifest, and the Christmas Lighting Festival, solidifying Leavenworth's new identity as a premier tourist destination.

Leavenworth is located 117 miles east of Seattle via US Highway 2, a drive that typically takes about 2.5 hours in clear conditions. However, winter travel over Stevens Pass can be longer due to snow and chain requirements, so always check WSDOT pass conditions. From Wenatchee, it is a 30-minute drive west on US 2.

While downtown Leavenworth is highly walkable, parking can be limited, especially during festivals and on weekends.
