The origins of Mbombela, originally known as Nelspruit, trace back to the 1870s when the Nel brothers—Andries, Gert, and Louis—utilized the fertile valley for winter cattle grazing. The official establishment of the town occurred in 1895, built upon the farm purchased by the Nel family. A pivotal moment in its early development was the completion of a railway station in 1892, part of the Eastern Railway line. This railway was crucial, connecting the newly discovered Witwatersrand goldfields to Delagoa Bay (modern-day Maputo, Mozambique), attracting traders and farmers to the region. During the Anglo-Boer War in 1900, Nelspruit briefly served as the seat of government for the South African Republic, an independent Boer republic. The town was officially proclaimed a village in 1905 and gained municipality status in 1940, expanding its self-governance and accelerating urban development. In 1994, Nelspruit was chosen as the administrative capital of the newly formed Mpumalanga province. A significant change occurred in October 2009 when the South African government officially renamed the city Mbombela, a SiSwati word meaning 'a lot of people together in a small space.' This change, though initially contested by some local businesses, was upheld by the courts in 2014. The dry winter months, from May to September, offer mild and comfortable weather, with daytime temperatures ranging from 22°C to 25°C (72-77°F) and cooler nights around 6-7°C (43-45°F), making it an excellent time for outdoor activities and wildlife viewing in nearby Kruger National Park. April and October also generally offer pleasant conditions.

Mbombela is generally safe for tourists, but like any city, vigilance is advised, especially avoiding walking alone after dark. Keep car doors locked, particularly at traffic lights, as vendors and beggars may approach. Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore the city and surrounding areas, offering flexibility to enjoy the scenic drives. Taxis and ride-hailing services like Bolt are also available. The Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP), about 27 km from the city center, offers regular flights from major South African cities.
