About Novo Mesto

The story of Novo Mesto

Novo Mesto, the seventh-largest city in Slovenia, functions as the economic and cultural core of the Lower Carniola (Dolenjska) region. Positioned on a significant bend of the Krka River, the city presents a fusion of historical depth and contemporary energy. Recognized as "the export capital of Slovenia" due to its successful pharmaceutical, automotive, and other industries, it also carries the designation "The Town of Situlae" because of its important archaeological discoveries.

The city's origins extend to the Stone Age, with continuous habitation for thousands of years; it was officially established in 1365 by Rudolf IV of Austria. Novo Mesto's allure resides in its graceful integration of history with its natural surroundings, offering scenic river views and a relaxed pace.

Beyond its industrial capabilities, Novo Mesto is a center for education, culture, and sports, with a dynamic social life supported by various organizations. It is a place where visitors can explore ancient heritage, engage in outdoor pursuits along the Krka River, and savor local culinary offerings, including the distinctive Cviček wine.

History

## From Prehistory to Habsburg Foundation Novo Mesto's history extends to the Stone Age, with archaeological discoveries indicating continuous habitation in the region for millennia. The area's geostrategic advantages, particularly the bend in the Krka River, drew early inhabitants, including the Illyrians and Celts. One of Europe's most important archaeological sites for this period, Kapiteljska njiva, is located here, with significant excavations from the 7th to the 5th century BC, revealing Hallstatt noble burials at Marof.

## Medieval Development and Ottoman Frontier Novo Mesto was officially established on April 7, 1365, by Rudolf IV von Habsburg, Duke of Austria, who recognized the strategic importance of the Krka river bend and granted the settlement city rights. He initially named it Rudolfovo in his honor, a name it officially held from 1865 to 1918. Over time, it became more commonly known as Novo Mesto, meaning "New Town." During the Middle Ages, it quickly grew into a regional center for commerce and culture, serving as a vital trading hub between the Adriatic coast and Central Europe. The city also became an important military base on the Ottoman frontier in the 15th century.

## Challenges and Renaissance Flourishing Despite its strategic importance, Novo Mesto faced substantial challenges, including being devastated by fires in 1576 and 1664, and a plague in 1599. Nevertheless, it continued to evolve into a crucial regional center. During the Renaissance, the city earned recognition for its skilled artisans and merchants, contributing to its prosperous past. The oldest building in Novo Mesto, the Saint Nicholas' Chapter Church (Kapitelj), dates to the Middle Ages and displays architectural characteristics from various periods due to historical circumstances like fires and lack of funds.

## Modern Era and Industrial Growth In the 20th century, Novo Mesto became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and later socialist Yugoslavia, before finally integrating into modern Slovenia after its independence in 1991. Today, the city is a significant industrial center, home to internationally recognized companies in the pharmaceutical (Krka), automotive (Revoz), and construction (Adria Mobil) sectors. This industrial success has earned it the title "the export capital of Slovenia." Novo Mesto also continues to be an administrative, ecclesiastical, cultural, educational, medical, and sports center for the Southeast Region of Slovenia.

What to see

The core of Novo Mesto is its Old Town, centered around Glavni trg (Main Square). This pedestrian-friendly square, one of the largest medieval city squares in Slovenia, is lined with historic buildings, colorful facades, and Baroque architecture. Here you will find the neo-Renaissance Town Hall, built in 1905, and arcaded walkways.

Overlooking the city from Kapitelj Hill is the Cathedral of St. Nicholas (Kapitelj), a prominent landmark with a distinctive skyline. This church, dating to the 15th century, houses an altarpiece depicting St. Nicholas by the celebrated Italian Renaissance painter Tintoretto.

The Franciscan Monastery, with its Church of St. Leonard, is another significant historical site. Established in 1472, the monastery holds a high-quality library with ancient manuscripts and Slovenia's only old Franciscan refectory from 1689.

Beyond the city center, the Krka River is central to Novo Mesto's identity. Visitors can walk along its banks, take a boat tour on a traditional Rudolf raft, or engage in kayaking and fishing. A short drive away, Otočec Castle, situated on an island in the Krka River, offers a fairytale experience with its renovated medieval architecture now serving as a luxurious hotel and restaurant.

For wine enthusiasts, Trška Gora Hill, a short drive north of Novo Mesto, offers a compelling visit. Its vineyards produce Cviček, a unique Slovenian wine, and many traditional wine cottages (zidanice) offer tastings and overnight stays with access to their cellars. The Museum of Dolenjska provides a comprehensive look into the region's expansive history, particularly its archaeological finds, including the famous situlae.
