About Panevėžys

The story of Panevėžys

Panevėžys, Lithuania's fifth-largest city, offers an authentic glimpse into Lithuanian life, blending a strong industrial heritage with a lively cultural scene. Situated on the banks of the Nevėžis River, which lends the city its name, Panevėžys serves as a significant cultural and economic hub in the country's northeast. It is a city that does not overwhelm with grand monuments or tourist throngs, but rather provides a genuine Baltic experience, where everyday life unfolds naturally.

Often considered a gateway to the scenic Aukštaitija region, Panevėžys is strategically located midway along the highway between the capitals of Vilnius and Riga. The city is characterized by thoughtful urban planning, incorporating green spaces and water, particularly around the Senvagė lake and its promenade. This creates a relaxed and aesthetically pleasing environment, inviting visitors to slow down and explore its public art and charming avenues.

History

From Royal Town to Industrial Hub

The history of Panevėžys extends back over five centuries, with its first documented mention on September 7, 1503. Grand Duke Alexander Jagiellon granted land for the construction of a church and other structures, effectively founding the city. The city's name, meaning "along the Nevėžis," reflects its location on the river. Initially, a small wooden church and parsonage were built on the right bank of the Nevėžis, forming what was known as Old Panevėžys.

By the mid-16th century, New Panevėžys began to develop rapidly on the left bank of the river, quickly surpassing the older settlement. The 17th century saw the construction of the first stonework building, the Archives of the Court, which remains the city's oldest surviving structure. In the early 18th century, Piarist monks established a church, monastery, and the city's first school, which evolved into a college, becoming a regional educational center.

The 19th century marked a period of significant growth and prosperity for Panevėžys. The construction of a railway and the establishment of the first factories led to a sixteen-fold expansion of the city, transforming it into a strong regional economic and cultural center. It became the fourth most important city in Lithuania by the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Panevėžys also played a role in the November and January Uprisings and was a center for knygnešiai (book smugglers) during the Lithuanian press ban.

Between the World Wars, Panevėžys continued to flourish in independent Lithuania, with its population rising from approximately 19,200 to 26,000 between 1923 and 1939. However, the city endured significant hardship during Soviet and Nazi occupations, including political repression, exiles to Siberia, and the murder of over 8,000 local people, predominantly Jews, during the Holocaust. After regaining independence in 1990, Panevėžys faced economic challenges but has since seen renewed investment and development, balancing its historical continuity with forward-looking ambition. Today, it remains a clean, green, and culturally rich city.
