From Medieval Stronghold to Romantic Ruin

The history of Pierrefonds begins in the 12th century with the construction of an initial castle. In 1392, King Charles VI granted the County of Valois, including Pierrefonds, to his brother Louis I, Duke of Orléans. From 1393 to 1407, Louis of Orléans commissioned a significant rebuilding of the castle by his court architect, Jean le Noir. This new fortress was a testament to late medieval military architecture, designed to defend Paris during the Hundred Years' War and showcase the Duke's power.

However, the castle's prominence also made it a target. After Louis of Orléans' assassination in 1407, the castle eventually fell into the hands of princes who opposed King Louis XIII. In 1617, Cardinal Richelieu, then Secretary of State for War, ordered the castle's destruction, deeming it a threat to royal authority. The castle was besieged and largely dismantled, left as a ruin for over two centuries.

The 19th-Century Rebirth

The 19th century brought a new chapter for Pierrefonds. Napoleon I purchased the ruins in 1810 for a modest sum. The castle then became a 'romantic ruin,' inspiring artists like Corot, who depicted it in several works. The true rebirth, however, came with Napoleon III. Passionate about the Middle Ages, he commissioned the renowned architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in 1857 to restore the château. Viollet-le-Duc's ambitious project was not a mere restoration but a reimagining of the castle as an idealized vision of medieval architecture, blending historical accuracy with his own creative interpretations. The restoration, which took over two decades and was completed in 1884, resulted in the spectacular neo-Gothic structure seen today.

Pierrefonds Through the World Wars

Beyond its medieval and 19th-century transformations, Pierrefonds played a role in the 20th century's major conflicts. During World War I, the castle served as a strategic military support center, housing up to 1,500 soldiers per night due to its proximity to the front lines. The village itself also suffered, being bombarded and largely destroyed in 1918. The thermal baths, once a symbol of Pierrefonds-les-Bains, were requisitioned as a hospital and later closed permanently. Despite these challenges, the Château de Pierrefonds reopened to visitors in 1867 and continues to be a significant cultural and historical landmark.

While summer (July and August) offers the warmest weather and longer opening hours for the castle, it is also the busiest period, especially on weekends and during school holidays. Winter is the quietest season, offering atmospheric views of the castle in crisp, low light with fewer visitors.

Pierrefonds is approximately 80 kilometers northeast of Paris. The most common way to reach Pierrefonds from Paris is by taking a train from Gare du Nord to Compiègne (about 45 minutes to 1 hour), then a taxi or a local bus (Bus 27 or 27-28) for the remaining 15 kilometers to Pierrefonds. Driving from Paris via the A1 motorway takes about 1.5 hours, with free parking available on Rue Sabatier.

The Château de Pierrefonds typically opens from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM from May 2nd to September 4th, and from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM from September 5th to April 30th. Last entry is one hour before closing. The castle is closed on January 1st, May 1st, and December 25th. Admission is €9 for adults, with free entry for those under 18, EU citizens aged 18-25, and on the first Sundays of January, February, March, and November. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a proper visit to the castle. Several restaurants and hotels are available in Pierrefonds and the surrounding area.
