Xiapu, a coastal county in China's Fujian Province, is recognized globally as a photographer's haven, cherished for its expansive and ever-shifting mudflats. While its economy once relied heavily on seafood, a shift towards tourism has seen the area embrace its photogenic qualities, even leading to the careful arrangement of some traditional scenes for visitors.

Xiapu's primary attraction is its diverse mudflat scenery, offering boundless photographic possibilities. Beiqi Village is celebrated for its 'tiger-skin' patterned mudflats and serves as an excellent location for capturing sunrise as fishermen attend to their seaweed racks and boats. For dramatic sunsets, Dongbi offers expansive views where golden light reflects off the sea, often featuring returning fishing boats.

Xiaohao Village is known for its colorful beaches and the interplay of light and shadow, particularly in the afternoon during ebb tide. Another iconic location is Shajiang S Bay, where countless bamboo poles create a distinctive S-shaped waterway, a classic Xiapu image. Beyond the mudflats, Yangjiaxi offers a different landscape with ancient banyan trees, some over 800 years old, and a pure maple leaf forest, providing a tranquil setting for photography and exploration.

For a glimpse into local life, consider a visit to Dongan Island, a village floating on the sea where thousands of fish rafts are connected, and fishermen live and cultivate fish. You can take a boat through the rafts and even observe fishermen feeding their fish. The Sansha Light and Shadow Boardwalk offers a scenic coastal walk with views of mountains and the sea, particularly beautiful around sunset.

The ideal time to visit Xiapu for photography and pleasant weather is between April and November. During April to June, the seaweed and fishery harvests offer extensive opportunities to capture scenes of people working on the sea. July to September, despite being typhoon season, provides clear seas and brilliant sunsets, perfect for capturing dramatic skies. October to December is the laver harvest season, and the cooler, crisp autumn air is excellent for photography, with the added benefit of red maple leaves in areas like Yangjiaxi. For mudflat photography, early morning or dusk around the 1st and 15th days of the lunar calendar often yield the best light and tidal conditions.

Xiapu is readily accessible via high-speed trains from major Chinese cities like Shanghai (approximately 5.5 hours), Xiamen (2.5 hours), Fuzhou (1 hour), and Hangzhou (4 hours). Flights can be taken to Fuzhou Changle International Airport (FOC) or Wenzhou Longwan Airport, followed by a high-speed train transfer to Xiapu.

Public transportation within Xiapu can be limited, as attractions are spread out. Self-driving or hiring a private car is highly recommended for flexibility and ease of access to various photography locations. For shorter distances within the county center, local buses, taxis, and motorcycle taxis are available. Accommodation options range from hotels in Xiapu county town, offering convenience and affordability, to Greek-style seaside B&Bs in Dongbi Village or Sansha Town, which provide sea views but at a higher price during peak season.
