The organized settlement officially began in 1833, primarily with craftsmen from Massachusetts and New England. Noah Graves is credited with initiating this settlement, purchasing 210 acres in 1833 after recognizing the river's potential. Chagrin Falls was incorporated as a village on March 12, 1844. Electric railway service began in 1896, extending to Hiram and Garrettsville, but ceased operations in 1925.
