From Gaelic Stronghold to Garrison Town

Enniskillen's origins reach back to ancient times, its name derived from the Irish 'Inis Ceithleann,' referencing a legendary warrior woman. The island's strategic position between Upper and Lower Lough Erne made it a natural point for settlement and a vital passage into Ulster.

The town's most prominent structure, Enniskillen Castle, was first erected in the 15th century by the formidable Gaelic Maguires, who held sway over the ancient kingdom of Fir Manach (Fermanagh). By 1297, the Maguires were acknowledged as the 'Kings of Lough Erne,' extending their influence across most of modern-day Fermanagh by 1400.
