Estaing, officially recognized as one of "The Most Beautiful Villages of France" (Les Plus Beaux Villages de France), is a commune in the Aveyron department of Southern France. The family's influence is evident in the Château d'Estaing, which served as their residence for nearly eight centuries.

Members of the d'Estaing family played notable roles in French history. Tristan Dieudonné d'Estaing, for instance, is said to have saved King Philippe Auguste at the Battle of Bouvines in 1214, receiving the right to place three fleurs-de-lys on his shield as a reward. Another prominent figure was Charles-Henri d'Estaing, an Admiral who commanded the French fleet during the American War of Independence. The d'Estaing family line became extinct in 1794 with the death of Admiral Charles Henri d'Estaing, who had no male heir.

## A Pilgrim's Passage The village has long been an important stop on the pilgrimage trails to Santiago de Compostela, a tradition that continues today. The Gothic bridge over the Lot River, a UNESCO World Heritage site and part of the pilgrim route, was constructed between 1490 and the early 16th century, with Bishop François d'Estaing encouraging its completion. The Church of Saint-Fleuret, built in the 15th century on the site of an older priory, houses the relics of Saint Fleuret, the village's patron saint. The feast of Saint Fleuret, celebrated on the first Sunday of July, has been observed since the 11th century with a costumed procession.

While the village is quieter in winter, summer brings more activity and various festivals. The Fête de Saint-Fleuret occurs on the first Sunday of July, and a medieval weekend takes place on the second weekend of September, with the village illuminated by candlelight in mid-August during 'la nuit lumiere'.

Estaing is located approximately 25 kilometers north of Rodez, in the Aveyron department.
