The history of Évian-les-Bains extends back to antiquity, with archaeological findings indicating human presence in the region since the Roman era. The town's name, stemming from the Celtic root 'evua,' simply signifies 'water.' It began to develop as a notable settlement in the 13th century when Count Peter II of Savoy fortified it, granting city privileges in 1265 and establishing it as an administrative hub.

The pivotal moment in Évian's transformation occurred in 1789 with the discovery of the purported healing qualities of the Sainte-Catherine spring, later renamed the Cachat spring. A French aristocrat, the Marquis de Laizer, claimed the water alleviated his liver ailment, sparking widespread curiosity. This led to scientific investigations in the early 1800s confirming the water's distinct properties.

In 1823, M. Fauconnet founded the Évian mineral water company, acquiring the primary springs. The first thermal spa opened in 1826, and by 1859, a new company, the Cachat mineral waters company, was formed to market the special water. The town officially adopted the name Évian-les-Bains in 1865, cementing its reputation as a developing spa town.

The Belle Époque and Beyond

The late 19th and early 20th centuries marked Évian's Golden Age, a period known as the Belle Époque. The construction of grand hotels, casinos, and thermal baths transformed Évian into an exclusive European resort. The Palais Lumière, originally a luxurious thermal spa built in 1902, and the opulent Hôtel Royal, constructed in 1909, exemplify this era of architectural magnificence. The town drew a distinguished clientele, including royalty like King George V of the United Kingdom and cultural figures such as the Lumière brothers.

Évian-les-Bains has also played a role on the international stage. The Évian Conference, which addressed the plight of Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany, convened here in July 1938. In 1962, the Évian Accords, which concluded the Algerian War, were signed in the town. More recently, Évian has hosted significant political gatherings, including the G8 summit in 2003 and the G7 summit in 2026. Despite these high-profile events, the town has maintained its serene and refined character.
