## From Ancient Origins to Feudal Power Josselin's history began around 1008 when Guéthénoc, Viscount of Porhoët, established the first castle on a rocky promontory overlooking the Oust valley. The fortress and the town that grew around it were named after his son, Goscelinus. This strategic location, at the crossroads of Roman roads and near the pilgrimage site of Notre-Dame du Roncier, made it an important military and commercial center throughout the Middle Ages.

However, this strategic importance also made Josselin a target. The original fortress was destroyed by Henry II of England between 1168 and 1175, who reportedly even sowed salt on its ruins to prevent reconstruction. Rebuilding efforts soon followed, restoring its defensive role. A significant transformation occurred in the late 14th century under Olivier V de Clisson, a powerful Breton soldier and Constable of France. He acquired the lordship of Josselin around 1370 and rebuilt it into a formidable stronghold with eight towers and a massive keep, designed to withstand artillery.

## The Rohan Legacy and Renaissance Flourish Through marriage, the castle passed to the Rohan family, one of Brittany's oldest and most influential noble lineages, who have owned it for centuries. By the late 15th and early 16th centuries, under Jean II de Rohan, the château began its transition from a purely military structure to a prestigious residence. An elegant residential wing was added, featuring flamboyant Gothic and early Renaissance architectural styles, with intricate granite carvings, ornamental dormer windows, and sculpted motifs. These additions showcased the family's status and alliances, including ties to the Breton ducal court under Anne of Brittany.

During the French Revolution, the château faced a period of neglect, serving as a prison and storage facility. However, in 1822, Caroline, Duchess of Berry, persuaded the then Duke of Rohan to restore it. Today, the Château de Josselin remains a private residence, continuously inhabited by the Rohan family, offering a unique blend of a living home and a historic monument.

The Château de Josselin is the centerpiece of the town, with its three imposing medieval towers reflected in the Oust River. While the river-facing side retains its defensive medieval character, the courtyard reveals an ornate Renaissance façade. Visitors can explore richly decorated rooms, a vast library, and the family's collection of art and antiques. The château's gardens, including French formal gardens, an English park, and a rose garden, are also open to the public.

Within the château's former stables, the Musée de la Poupée et du Jouet (Doll and Toy Museum) houses a private collection of dolls and toys, some dating from the 17th century. The Basilique Notre-Dame-du-Roncier, a Gothic basilica, stands in the heart of Josselin. Its stained-glass windows and ornate interior are notable, and climbing the bell tower offers expansive views of the town and castle.

The Old Town features narrow, winding streets lined with half-timbered houses, particularly inviting on Rue des Trente and Rue Olivier de Clisson. The Sainte-Croix district, located across the Oust River, is one of the oldest and most picturesque neighborhoods, known for its old stone houses and traditional architecture. The Nantes-Brest Canal, which runs through Josselin, provides scenic towpaths for walking, cycling, or boating.

The best time to visit Josselin is from April to October, when the weather is mild and the gardens and canal paths are in bloom. Summer, from June to August, is the peak season, offering warm temperatures (18–27°C / 64–81°F) and a lively atmosphere with festivals and events like the Médiévales de Josselin. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) provide a quieter experience with pleasant temperatures (10–20°C / 50–68°F) and beautiful scenery as foliage changes. While winter visits are peaceful, many attractions, including the château, have reduced opening hours.

Josselin is easily accessible by car, approximately 4.5 hours (430 km) from Paris via the A11 motorway. While public transport connections directly into Josselin are limited, long-distance buses run to nearby towns like Ploërmel or Vannes, from which local transport or taxis can be arranged. The town itself is small and walkable, with most attractions, including the castle and medieval old town, easily explored on foot. The Tourist Information Centre, located in the town center, provides maps and information, including an English version of the heritage trail leaflet.

For dining, Crêperie La Marine is recommended for traditional Breton crêpes and local cider, though reservations are advisable during peak times. Josselin hosts a weekly market every Saturday morning in Place de la République, offering fresh produce, artisanal goods, and souvenirs. A large Super U market is also available for groceries, located about 850 meters from the château.
