The first European to document the area was explorer Ludwig Leichhardt in 1844. European settlement commenced in the 1870s, primarily drawn by the extensive stands of red cedar, a valuable timber. Cedar logs were transported by bullock teams to the coast, then floated down the Pumicestone Passage for export.

Early selectors, including Isaac Burgess and Joseph McCarthy, claimed land in the late 1870s. The town of Maleny was officially declared in 1891.
