Mansfield, Victoria, is a town cradled in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, approximately 180 to 200 kilometers northeast of Melbourne. With a population of 5,541 as of the 2021 census, it serves as the administrative heart of the Mansfield local government area. Once heavily reliant on farming and logging, Mansfield has gracefully transitioned into a prominent tourist destination, acting as a crucial support town for the major Australian ski resort, Mount Buller.

Indigenous Heritage and Early European Arrival

The Mansfield region's story stretches back over 2000 generations with the Taungurung people, specifically the Yowengillum clan, as its traditional custodians. They lived throughout the area, including Alexandra and the Upper Goulburn River, demonstrating an intimate knowledge of their environment. Their diet included staple foods like myrniong, bracken fern, tree fern, kangaroo apple, and cherry ballart, while stringybark was used for shelters and baskets. The Taungurung people also utilized fibrous plants for nets and various tree species for tools like shields, clubs, boomerangs, and canoes. They possessed a sophisticated understanding of the seasons, identified by the stars and the life cycles of local flora and fauna.

European presence in the region began in 1839 when Andrew Ewing, a stockman for Watson & Hunter, scouted the area for a sheep station. He encountered the Yowengillum people along a waterway he named Devils River. Ewing established the Mount Battery sheep station in 1840, with the first overseer's hut near the present-day Mansfield. The town itself was first surveyed in 1851 and initially known as Mount Battery before being renamed Mansfield, possibly after a market town in Nottinghamshire, England, or an early European settler, Edward Mansfield.

Gold Rush, Bushrangers, and Development

The discovery of gold nearby in the 1850s spurred further settlement, and Mansfield grew as a service and supply center for gold mining camps to the south. The Post Office opened on January 1, 1858. By 1878, the town had expanded to include several general stores, butchers, blacksmiths, a shire hall, library, hospital, three churches, and Victoria Hall for concerts. The railway arrived in Mansfield from Tallarook in 1891, significantly boosting the district's development, though it ceased passenger services in 1977 and closed in 1978.

Mansfield is also deeply intertwined with the story of Australia's most notorious bushranger, Ned Kelly. In October 1878, an incident at Stringybark Creek near Tolmie resulted in the deaths of three police officers at the hands of the Kelly Gang. A marble monument commemorating these officers was erected in 1880 at the intersection of Mansfield's main streets, and their graves can be found in the Mansfield Cemetery. The region continues to embrace its high-country identity, shaped by generations of farming families who drove cattle into the Australian Alps.

Mansfield is approximately 180 to 200 kilometers northeast of Melbourne and can be reached by car in about 2.5 hours. V/Line bus services also connect Melbourne to Mansfield, with departures typically twice a day. While exploring the High Country, a 4WD vehicle is not essential for reaching Mansfield itself, but it can be beneficial for accessing some of the rougher tracks in the surrounding areas.
