Tracing Potes' Past

A settlement was established in the 8th century under Alfonso I of Asturias, and Potes first appeared in written records in 847, referencing its parish church. By the 10th century, it had become the administrative heart of the Liébana comarca, and by the 13th century, it was recognized as a city.

The Middle Ages saw Potes as a central point for conflicts between powerful noble families vying for regional dominance. In 1444, the Marquis of Santillana gained control, making Potes the capital of Liébana and commissioning the construction of a significant tower, now known as the Torre del Infantado. The town remained under lordship until the 19th century, with the mayor appointed by the Duke of Infantado, finally establishing its own town hall in 1822.

A more recent, difficult chapter in Potes' history occurred during the Spanish Civil War when the town suffered extensive destruction by fire. Despite this devastation, its historic core, dating back to the 14th century, has been meticulously reconstructed and was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1983. Today, Potes stands as one of northern Spain's most well-preserved medieval urban landscapes, with its intricate avenues and traditional stone and wood buildings, many adorned with the crests of former noble families.

Wander through the historic Old Town of Potes, an intricate network of narrow avenues lined with traditional stone buildings and flower-adorned balconies. During these periods, the weather is agreeable for outdoor pursuits like walking, and the surrounding mountains are verdant with foliage and wildflowers in spring, or rich with autumn colors. Temperatures are mild, with average highs in May and October around 16-18°C. Summers (July and August) are also pleasant, with average daytime highs around 22-23°C, but can be more humid. While Potes experiences a relatively rainy climate year-round, July and August tend to be slightly drier. November is the wettest month.

Potes is most readily accessed by car, with picturesque routes via the A-8 motorway (Autovía del Cantábrico) and then the N-621 or N-625 roads. The drive from Santander typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Alternatively, regular bus services connect Santander to Potes, with the journey lasting approximately 2.5 hours. The nearest major airport is Santander Airport (SDR), about 120 km away, where renting a car offers the most flexibility for onward travel.

Once in Potes, the compact historic center is best explored on foot, allowing you to wander its stone avenues and cross its notable bridges. For exploring nearby attractions like the Picos de Europa National Park or the Monastery of Santo Toribio, having a car is advantageous, though local transport options are available for popular day trips. Potes holds a weekly market on Mondays, offering local produce, cheeses, and crafts. The town has various restaurants, shops for souvenirs and outdoor supplies, and essential services like pharmacies.
