From Farmland to Famed Spa Town

The origins of São Lourenço trace back to the late 17th century, when bandeirantes—pioneers exploring Brazil's interior—traversed the region in search of gold and precious stones. Actual settlement began with a large fazenda (farm) owned by Colonel Lourenço Gomes Leme, whose name, combined with an homage to Saint Lawrence, is believed to have given the area its designation.

For an extended period, the territory remained an agricultural expanse, primarily focused on coffee cultivation and cattle breeding, with a cultural life influenced by Mineiro traditions of hospitality and religiosity. However, the destiny of São Lourenço shifted dramatically with the discovery of its mineral springs. In 1890, Antônio Francisco de Sales acquired the lands containing the springs, initiating their commercial development and drawing the first visitors. This led to the founding of the 'São Lourenço Mineral Water Company' in 1905, which began industrial water bottling and the construction of large-scale infrastructure.

April 1, 1927, marked São Lourenço's official separation from Pouso Alto, granting it independent municipality status. The 1930s and 1940s are considered the 'Golden Era' of the city, characterized by the construction of grand hotels and the main pavilions of the Parque das Águas, completed in 1935. During this period, the city became a magnet for the Brazilian elite and politicians. After the ban on gambling in Brazil in 1946, São Lourenço successfully reoriented itself toward family vacations and wellness tourism. In 1978, it was officially granted the honorary status of a Hydromineral Resort (Estância Hidromineral) of Minas Gerais. The early 2000s saw the launch of the 'Trem das Águas' (Water Train), reviving a historic steam engine route and adding to the city's appeal for visitors.

The Parque das Águas is the vital center of São Lourenço, an expansive landscape reserve covering over 400,000 square meters. São Lourenço experiences a mild, agreeable climate throughout the year, with average daily highs ranging from 22°C in cooler months to 27°C during the warmest period. The wet season typically extends from October to March, with January being the rainiest month. The dry season, from May to August, offers clear skies and minimal rainfall, with July being the driest month. While summer (December to March) is warm, it also brings higher humidity and frequent rain. Winter (June to August) is characterized by dry, clear weather and comfortably warm days, though nights can be cooler. The most favorable times for general outdoor activities are from early April to mid-June and from late July to late September.

São Lourenço is approximately 3.5 hours from both São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, making it accessible for shorter trips. While there isn't an active passenger airport in the city, major metropolitan airports like São Paulo/Guarulhos (GRU) serve as primary gateways, followed by overland travel. Buses connect São Paulo to São Lourenço, with journeys averaging around 5 hours and 25 minutes.

The city is generally considered safe for travelers, with a welcoming local population and a low crime rate. However, standard precautions, such as being observant at night and avoiding carrying large amounts of cash, are always recommended. The local currency is the Brazilian Real.
