About Séguret

The story of Séguret

Séguret, officially recognized as one of "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France," is a medieval village etched into a hillside in the Vaucluse department of Provence. It surveys a plain blanketed with vineyards, framed by the dramatic Dentelles de Montmirail mountains. The village's name, derived from the Provençal word "Segur," signifies "safe" or "security," a testament to its historically fortified position.

Strolling through Séguret's narrow, stone-paved paths, known as calades, evokes a journey through time. Ancient stone houses, some with doorways dating back to the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, line the winding routes. The village maintains an enduring atmosphere, inviting visitors to uncover its deep heritage and experience the Provençal way of life.

History

From Roman Foundations to Medieval Stronghold

The story of Séguret extends to prehistoric times, with evidence of early habitation found in nearby caves. The region was part of the Voconce territory, experiencing significant growth during the Gallo-Roman era. In 1876, a 3-meter statue of a Roman god, an eagle at his feet and his hand resting on a wheel, was unearthed in the vineyards surrounding the village, alongside a statue of a forest god holding a flute. These artifacts illuminate the area's ancient past. The original statues are now in Avignon, though a statue of a forest god remains within the Chapelle Sainte Thècle.

The village, as it appears today, largely formed during the early Middle Ages, between the 10th and 12th centuries. Its strategic location on a hillside, offering vistas of the Rhône Valley, made it a natural defensive point. The initial fortifications were erected by the Counts of Toulouse in the 11th century. Séguret's narrative became closely interwoven with that of the Comtat Venaissin, a papal state until the French Revolution in 1793. The village shifted between papal rule and the authority of the Count of Toulouse.

During the Religious Wars, the castle was expanded and strengthened, though it fell to Protestant troops in 1563. Despite this, Séguret remained a fortified town, its 14th-century walls and gates providing protection. The 10th-century Saint-Denis church was rebuilt and enlarged in the 13th century, with further additions in the 17th and 18th centuries. The 17th-century bell tower with its distinctive one-hand clock, and the 1846 lavoir, further exemplify the village's enduring architectural legacy.

What to see

Séguret reveals its character best on foot, allowing for the discovery of its intricate details. Enter through the medieval Portail Reynier, also known as Portail de la Bise, a 12th-century arched gateway that formed part of the original defenses. Follow the Rue des Poternes, a stone-paved path that meanders through the old village, disclosing ancient stone buildings and doorways from past centuries.

In the village's core, the Rue des Poternes expands into a small square featuring the 17th-century Fontaine des Mascarons, a historical monument adorned with carved stone faces, and a covered lavoir constructed in 1846. Next to the fountain stands a 17th-century bell tower crowned with a wrought-iron campanile, notable for its singular one-hand clock from 1660. Further along, the 10th-century Eglise Saint-Denis, a Romanesque church, provides views of the surrounding countryside and the Dentelles de Montmirail. Visitors can also explore the Sainte-Thècle Chapel, which hosts art exhibitions and traditional santon displays. For sweeping views, follow the footpath to the remnants of the feudal castle above the village.

The ideal time to experience Séguret with pleasant weather extends from April through October. During these months, temperatures are comfortable, ranging from 19°C to 28°C, and rainfall is lighter. The village also hosts events such as the "Hue Vin" festival in August and Christmas nativity figurine exhibitions in December and January.
