From Ancient Settlements to Royal Strongholds

The area around Zvolen has been continuously inhabited since the Paleolithic era, with evidence of fortified settlements dating back to the Stone Age. In the 9th century, a Slavic settlement in what is now the Môťová neighborhood became a regional center of central Slovakia.

The 11th and 12th centuries saw the construction of Pustý hrad, or 'Deserted Castle,' a monumental fortification that became one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. The town of Zvolen itself developed beneath this ancient stronghold, strategically positioned on the important Via Magna trade route connecting Buda and Kraków. This new Zvolen Castle became a favored royal seat, even hosting the wedding of King Louis's daughter Mary and Emperor Sigismund in 1385.
