East London, affectionately known as "Buffalo City," offers a relaxed atmosphere along South Africa's southeastern coast. From Port Rex to Buffalo City

The history of East London is intrinsically linked to its strategic position at the mouth of the Buffalo River. The modern city's origins trace back to 1836 when John Bailie, one of the 1820 British Settlers, surveyed the river mouth. Initially named Port Rex, the settlement was officially founded in 1847 with the construction of Fort Glamorgan, built to protect the burgeoning port. The town was subsequently renamed London in honor of the United Kingdom's capital, eventually becoming East London.

East London was under military government until 1860. The arrival of German settlers in 1858 and the subsequent granting of land on the east bank of the Buffalo River led to the establishment of Panmure, a village named after the British Secretary of State for War at the time. The construction of railway lines and the East London harbor, which has been operating since 1870, significantly accelerated the area's development. East London was officially elevated to city status in 1914.

Post-apartheid, in 2000, East London became part of the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, which also includes King William's Town and Bhisho. The city has seen proposals for renaming, including KuGompo, though the name has not been formally adopted due to an existing neighborhood with that name. Today, East London stands as a significant industrial center in the Eastern Cape, with a strong focus on the automotive industry.

Spring (September to October) and autumn (March to May) offer milder weather and fewer crowds, perfect for hiking and sightseeing. While winter (June to August) can be chilly in the evenings, it's a good time for whale watching along the coast.

While major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger stores, it's advisable to carry some cash for smaller purchases, markets, and tipping. East London Airport (ELS), officially known as King Phalo Airport, is the primary gateway for travelers, located just 7.6 km from the city center. It handles domestic flights connecting to major South African cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town. Car rentals are available at the airport, and public transportation includes buses and minibus taxis, with Uber and metered taxis also operating. While generally safe for tourists, it's wise to exercise common sense: avoid walking alone at night, especially in the Central Business District or deserted beach areas, and be vigilant against petty theft in crowded spots.
