## From Lenape Lands to Colonial Crossroads Before European settlement, the land that now constitutes Flemington belonged to the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. In 1712, a substantial land parcel, including the Flemington area, was acquired by William Penn and Daniel Coxe. The borough itself takes its name from Samuel Fleming, an Irish-born colonial landowner and tavern owner who purchased land in the early 1700s and constructed his home, now known as the Samuel Fleming House, around 1756.
