From Railroad Terminus to Sunshine City

St. Petersburg's origins trace back to the late 19th century when John C. Williams of Detroit acquired 2,500 acres of land in 1875. Thirteen years later, he transferred a portion of this land to Peter Demens, a Russian aristocrat, in exchange for Demens extending the Orange Belt Railway to Williams' settlement. Legend suggests that Williams and Demens flipped a coin to name the burgeoning town; Demens prevailed and named it after his birthplace, Saint Petersburg, Russia, while Williams named the first hotel after his hometown, Detroit. The town was incorporated on February 29, 1892, with a population of 300 people, and then reincorporated as a city in 1903.

The early 20th century saw substantial development, including the creation of St. Petersburg's waterfront park system and the introduction of a trolley service in 1904. The city's first real estate expansion began in 1909. In 1914, St. Petersburg made aviation history with the world's first scheduled commercial flight, a Benoist XIV flying boat piloted by Tony Jannus, which traversed Tampa Bay to Tampa.

St. Petersburg is located in Pinellas County, on Florida's west coast.
