About Augustów

The story of Augustów

Augustów, a city in northeastern Poland, is a place where water and forest intertwine, forging a landscape that has earned it the epithet "Venice of the North." It sits on the Netta River, beside the historic Augustów Canal, and is encircled by a chain of glacial lakes—Necko, Białe, and Rospuda. The city offers a singular fusion of natural splendor and historical intrigue. It is a recognized spa town, esteemed for its clean air, pine-spruce woodlands, and therapeutic peat deposits, all contributing to its standing as a health resort.

Beyond its scenic beauty, Augustów serves as a center for active tourism, presenting abundant opportunities for water sports such as kayaking, sailing, and windsurfing on its many lakes. The Augustów Forest provides extensive pathways for hiking, cycling, and even horseback riding. Whether drawn to tranquil boat cruises along the historic canal or the thrill of water skiing, Augustów extends a refreshing escape for those seeking both repose and adventure in the heart of the Podlaskie Province.

History

## From Yotvingian Lands to Royal City Augustów's narrative commences long before its official establishment, with the lands inhabited by the Yotvingian tribe until their defeat by the Teutonic Order in 1283, leaving the region uninhabited. A settlement received its first mention in 1496, but the city's true origin arrived in the mid-16th century. Augustów was founded around 1540 by Bona Sforza and formally granted Magdeburg rights in 1557 by King Sigismund II Augustus, after whom the city is named. The king personally supervised the city's layout, envisioning it as an ideal summer residence, which shaped its royal character and its preserved historic urban design, including a spacious market square that remains its core today.

## A Strategic Waterway and Turbulent Times The 19th century brought considerable development with the construction of the Augustów Canal between 1823 and 1839. This ambitious undertaking, conceived by military engineers like Ignacy Prądzyński, aimed to forge a trade route bypassing Prussian customs duties, connecting the Vistula and Neman rivers. Although its initial strategic importance waned with revised trade agreements and the advent of railways, the canal endures as a testament to 19th-century engineering. Nevertheless, Augustów's past has also been scarred by conflict. The city endured invasions by Swedes and Tatars, and a devastating plague in earlier centuries. It sustained severe damage during the November Insurrection and World War I.

## World War II and Its Aftermath The 20th century brought profound sorrow. Following the German-Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939, Augustów fell under Soviet occupation until 1941, leading to the deportation of inhabitants to Kazakhstan and the murder of Poles in the Katyn massacre. When German forces occupied Augustów in 1941, they established a forced labor camp and a ghetto for the Jewish community, which was ultimately liquidated with the mass execution of thousands of Jews. After the war, in July 1945, the region became the site of the Augustów Roundup, a Soviet operation targeting anti-communist partisans, resulting in the disappearance and presumed execution of approximately 600 Poles—a crime declared by the Polish Institute of National Remembrance as "the largest crime committed by the Soviets on Polish lands after World War II." Despite these immense losses, Augustów rebuilt and expanded its recreational infrastructure, growing in popularity as a spa and holiday destination after World War I, a status it officially solidified in 1993.

What to see

Augustów's primary attractions center on its singular natural environment and the venerable Augustów Canal. A boat excursion along the Augustów Canal, a 19th-century engineering marvel, is essential, providing picturesque views and the chance to experience its historic locks. The canal links several lakes, including Necko, Białe, and Studzieniczne, which are ideal for various water sports such as kayaking, sailing, and swimming. One can also enjoy a leisurely walk along the boulevard that traces the Netta River and Lake Necko, enjoying the promenade and pier.

For those interested in history and culture, a visit to the Augustów Canal Museum offers insights into the waterway's construction and significance. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Studzieniczna, a popular pilgrimage destination, is located on Lake Studzieniczne and features a beautiful chapel. The expansive Augustów Forest provides numerous pathways for hiking and cycling, offering opportunities to explore the unspoiled nature of the region. Close by, Wigry National Park and its Camaldolese Monastery are also worthy of a visit.
