From Monastic Powerhouse to 'City of Books'

The story of La Charité-sur-Loire is deeply intertwined with its Cluniac priory, established in 1059. By the 12th century, this Benedictine monastery had grown into one of France's most prosperous, serving as a significant outpost of the influential Cluny Abbey. The Priory Church of Notre-Dame, a remarkable example of Burgundian Romanesque art, was, at its zenith, the second-largest church in Christendom after Cluny itself, housing over 200 monks.

However, the priory's prominence encountered difficulties. The Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion gradually weakened the city, a strategic location on the Loire. A destructive fire in 1559 caused extensive damage, particularly to the nave of the church. Despite rebuilding efforts in the 17th and 18th centuries, the abbey never fully recovered its former stature. During the French Revolution, the priory was dissolved and its buildings were sold off, becoming integrated into the urban fabric.

The 19th century introduced further perils, with plans to dismantle parts of the church for a new road, only averted by the intervention of Prosper Mérimée, the first inspector of Historic Monuments. The priory's resurgence began with its UNESCO World Heritage classification in 1998, as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela. Since 2001, extensive restoration programs have been underway. In 2011, La Charité-sur-Loire was awarded the 'Ville d'Art et d'Histoire' (Town of Art and History) label, and in 2012, it became a Cultural Centre of Encounter, focusing on the theme of 'the word' in all its forms. This led to its current reputation as a 'City of Books' and 'City of Words,' a hub for literary events and artisans.

Begin your exploration at the Priory Church of Notre-Dame, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Observe its Romanesque architecture, particularly the carved figures above the doorways, the chevet encircled by chapels, and the bell tower. Walk the same path of 84 steps that pilgrims have used since the 12th century to reach the church.

The town hosts various book-related events throughout the year, including the Festival du Mot in May, which celebrates language in all its manifestations.

La Charité-sur-Loire is situated in the Nièvre department of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, approximately 25 km northwest of Nevers. It is readily accessible by road via the A77 autoroute (exit La Charité-sur-Loire) and by rail, with direct train connections to Paris from La Charité station. The town's Tourist Office provides helpful information and is open daily from April to September, with reduced hours in October, November, and March, and closed from December to February.

While exploring, be aware that the Loire River has experienced considerable floods in the past, with notable events in 1846, 1856, 1866, and 1910. Flood markers are visible near the bridge. Parking and various shops and restaurants are available in town.
