Rupit, a medieval village in Catalonia, Spain, appears to exist beyond the reach of time. Located about 100 kilometers north of Barcelona, it is a place where 16th and 17th-century stone houses line ancient, often rocky, thoroughfares. The village forms part of the Rupit i Pruit municipality, situated in the Collsacabra subregion of Osona, at an elevation of 822 meters above sea level.

From Castle Origins to Baroque Splendor

The story of Rupit begins in the year 968, with the earliest records mentioning the church of Sant Joan de Fàbregues and its accompanying castle. The village itself began to take shape around the Rupit castle in the 12th century. This new castle replaced an older structure in Fàbregues, and as settlers built their homes nearby, the community expanded.

Noble families played a significant role in Rupit's development, commissioning a new church, Sant Miquel, close to their residences, which eventually became the parish church. While often described as a medieval settlement, most of the houses visible today in Rupit were constructed in the 17th century in a Baroque manner. The 17th and 18th centuries marked a period of considerable prosperity for the town. These stone houses frequently display the year of their construction and the names of their founders, alongside sculpted windows and wooden balconies.

In 1959, the municipality was officially named Rupit, and in 1977, the hamlet of Pruit was joined with Rupit village, forming the current municipality of Rupit i Pruit. Despite its secluded location, Rupit has embraced tourism as a means of economic growth, inviting visitors to experience its singular appeal and preserved heritage.

To truly absorb Rupit, begin by crossing the well-known suspension bridge, a 28-meter structure built in 1945 and renewed in 1994, which serves as the primary pedestrian entry to the village. Once across, wander through the historic center, where stone houses from the 16th to 18th centuries line both paved and naturally rocky pathways. Observe the construction dates and names of original founders etched into many facades.

Key architectural sights include the Baroque-style Church of Sant Miquel, offering perspectives of the village from its bell tower. Nearby, you will find the Main Square (Plaça Major) and the Knight's Square (Plaça Cavallers), both evocative spots. Do not overlook Fossar Street, a steep, ancient stone path considered one of the most rustic sections of the municipality. At its summit stand the remains of Rupit Castle, constructed around the year 1000 on a rocky prominence. Other historic artisan dwellings, such as the apothecary's house, the Soler notary's office, and the old blacksmith's forge, also provide a glimpse into the village's past.

Beyond the village, a trail leads to the Sallent Waterfall, Catalonia's tallest cascade with a drop exceeding 90 meters, particularly striking during the rainy season. The Hermitage of Santa Magdalena, a Baroque-style hermitage from the 17th century, is also accessible via a narrow path from the church, providing expansive views.

Rupit offers enjoyment throughout the year, but provides distinct experiences depending on the season. For pleasant weather and optimal hiking conditions, consider a visit between May and October. Spring (April and May) is especially recommended for witnessing the Sallent Waterfall at its most voluminous due to increased rainfall. Autumn (September to November) also brings mild weather and beautiful natural surroundings. While summers are warm, winters can be cold. For a celebratory atmosphere, visit during Christmas to experience the village's live nativity scene, or in late September for the Rupit Town Festival.

Rupit is approximately 100 kilometers from Barcelona, a journey that typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours by car. Driving within the village is not permitted, so visitors must park in the external parking area at the entrance and explore on foot. A tourist information booth is situated near the entrance, where you can obtain a map of the area.

Accommodation options in Rupit include rural hotels, guesthouses, and vacation rentals; reserving in advance is advisable, especially during busy seasons. While knowing some basic Spanish or Catalan phrases can be helpful, many people in the tourist industry speak English. The village offers a variety of shops selling local handicrafts and traditional Catalan food, such as fuets (cured sausages) and ratafía (a sweet liqueur).
