About Târgu Mureș

The story of Târgu Mureș

Târgu Mureș, often called the “city of roses,” is a lively urban center in the heart of Romania's Transylvania region, distinguished by its particular blend of Romanian and Hungarian heritage. Set along the Mureș River, the city serves as a significant cultural and educational hub. With a population of approximately 116,000 residents, Târgu Mureș offers a spirited yet relaxed environment for travelers seeking a blend of history and modernity.

The city's dual cultural identity is palpable, with both Romanian and Hungarian languages commonly heard on its streets, reflecting a population that includes a substantial Hungarian community. This multiculturalism is woven into the city's fabric, from its architecture to its cuisine, offering a distinctive Transylvanian experience.

History

From Market Town to Cultural Center

Târgu Mureș's origins trace back to the early 14th century, first documented in a papal registry in 1332 under the Latin name 'Novum Forum Siculorum,' meaning 'The New Market of the Seklars.' This name directly points to its initial purpose as a commercial hub. Later, in 1349, it appeared as Agropolis, and by the early 15th century, the name signifying 'Market on the Mureș River' became established, a meaning reflected in its modern Romanian and Hungarian names.

The city's growth was significantly shaped by its geographical position on the Mureș River and at the intersection of important trade routes. In 1482, King Matthias Corvinus granted Târgu Mureș the right to hold fairs, solidifying its status as a regional trading center. The economic life of early Târgu Mureș revolved around craft guilds, with associations of shoemakers, furriers, tailors, and butchers actively operating by the 15th century. These guilds were so influential that they financed and constructed the bastions of the city fortress, each bearing the name of its respective guild.

A significant political milestone occurred in 1616 when Prince Gabriel Bethlen granted Târgu Mureș the status of a Free Royal City, accelerating its administrative development and granting residents greater autonomy. The city received a major boost in 1754 when it became the seat of the supreme court of justice for the Principality of Transylvania. Târgu Mureș transformed into a modern town in the second half of the 19th century with the expansion of the railway line.

The early 20th century marked a period of significant urban modernization, particularly under Mayor György Bernády, who initiated the construction of several Art Nouveau buildings. The grand Palace of Culture, inaugurated in 1913, stands as a testament to this era, blending Viennese Secessionism with local folk art. After World War I, Târgu Mureș became part of Romania. The city maintained its reputation as an important cultural and educational center throughout the centuries, a legacy that continues today with its universities and libraries.

What to see

Begin your exploration in Piața Trandafirilor (Roses Square), the city's central square, lined with cafes, restaurants, churches, and monuments. The square is a showcase of Romanian and Hungarian cultures. The most prominent building here is the Palace of Culture, a flamboyant early 20th-century structure known for its Art Nouveau style, intricate exterior mosaics, frescoes, and stained-glass windows. Inside, explore the Hall of Mirrors and the various museums, including art galleries and the Mureș County Library.

Just a few blocks northeast of the Palace of Culture, you will find the Ethnographic Museum, housed in the Baroque Toldalagi Palace, dating back to 1762. The museum displays traditional costumes, crafts, and everyday items. The Târgu Mureș Fortress, a 17th-century citadel built on the ruins of an earlier 15th-century fortification, offers a peaceful retreat with landscaped alleys, bastions, and fortification walls. Within its walls, you will discover the city's oldest church, the Reformed Church, originally a Catholic place of worship from 1316. The fortress also hosts an archaeology and history museum.

Another significant stop is the Teleki-Bolyai Library, founded in the late 18th century by Count Samuel Teleki. It houses over 250,000 rare books and manuscripts, including early translations of the Bible into Romanian and Hungarian. For expansive city views, head to Cornești Plateau, which also features a zoo.
