About Überlingen

The story of Überlingen

Überlingen, a captivating city on the northern shore of Lake Constance in Germany's Baden-Württemberg region, gracefully combines medieval grandeur with the tranquil atmosphere of a lakeside resort. With a story reaching back to Roman times, and first mentioned as 'Iburinga' in 770, the city's past as a Free Imperial City remains visible in its well-preserved Old Town.

The city's advantageous position on the Überlinger See, an arm of Lake Constance, provides picturesque waterfront views and a temperate climate. Überlingen is recognized for its spa culture, verdant parks, and proximity to outdoor pursuits like hiking and cycling. It serves as an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area, including vineyards, gentle hills, and fruit orchards.

Beyond its scenic setting, Überlingen is a city of profound depth, holding narratives that span from ancient Roman settlements to poignant modern history. Its pedestrian-friendly center, lively promenade, and cultural offerings make it a compelling destination for those seeking both repose and discovery.

History

From Roman Roots to Imperial Splendor

The origins of Überlingen extend to Roman times, though evidence of Stone Age settlements along the Lake Constance shoreline suggests human activity long before Roman occupation. These early communities, part of the Hallstatt culture, comprised dozens of flourishing groups of 50-100 individuals.

The city, first formally documented as 'Iburinga' in 770, received city rights in 1211. By the 14th century, Überlingen had attained the esteemed status of a Free Imperial City, a period marked by considerable architectural development and a reputation for its wines. The construction of the Münster St. Nikolaus, a substantial late Gothic basilica, commenced around 1350 and continued until 1576, becoming the largest late Gothic church on Lake Constance. The historic Town Hall, built between 1490 and 1494, also dates from this era, influenced by a visit from Emperor Frederick III.

Wartime Shadows and Post-War Innovation

Überlingen's history includes darker chapters, particularly during World War II. Between June 1944 and April 1945, forced laborers from the Überlingen-Aufkirch subcamp constructed the Goldbach tunnel, an underground facility intended for armaments factories, where 170 prisoners died. After the war, Überlingen demonstrated a forward-thinking approach to urban development. In 1972, it became the first city in the German Federal Republic to introduce a second home tax, a model that would later be adopted by other municipalities.

A Place of Healing and Remembrance

By the 1950s, Überlingen had established itself as a prime tourist destination, particularly for health and wellness. It became Baden-Württemberg's first 'Kneippheilbad,' a certified health resort focusing on the principles of hydrotherapy, diet, and exercise. Modern Überlingen also carries the weight of a more recent tragedy. In July 2002, the city gained international attention due to a mid-air collision above its suburbs, which tragically claimed 71 lives, including many children. A memorial now stands as a somber reminder of this event.

What to see

Begin your exploration at the Münster St. Nikolaus, Überlingen's impressive Gothic parish church, constructed between 1350 and 1576. Give special attention to the intricate carved altar by Jörg Zürn, a masterpiece of German Mannerism. Directly across, the historic Town Hall (Rathaus), dating from the late 1400s, showcases a remarkable Ratsaal with vaulted ceilings and paneled walls adorned with coats of arms.

Amble along the Seepromenade (lake promenade), the longest on Lake Constance, offering scenic views of the lake and the distant Swiss Alps. The promenade leads to the Bodensee-Therme Überlingen, where you can unwind in thermal waters rising from deep underground. For a botanical retreat, visit the Stadtgarten (City Garden), frequently called the 'Little Mainau,' featuring diverse plant collections, including a rose garden and exotic species.

Delve into local history at the Städtisches Museum (Municipal Museum), housed in the Reichlin-von-Meldegg-Haus, one of Germany's earliest Renaissance buildings. Explore the preserved sections of the Stadtmauer (city walls) and the Franziskanertor (Franciscan Gate), which once safeguarded the medieval town. For a poignant historical experience, visit the Goldbacher Stollen, a former WWII forced labor tunnel.

When to visit

Überlingen offers a temperate climate, making it an inviting destination throughout the year. The best time for warm-weather activities and outdoor exploration is from late June to early September, when temperatures average 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). This is peak tourist season, ideal for lakeside activities and festivals.

For those seeking milder weather and fewer crowds, late spring (May) and early autumn (September) are excellent, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F). Autumn also brings beautiful fall foliage and harvest festivals. Winter (December to February) is colder, with occasional snow, but offers the appeal of Christmas markets.
