Vitória, the capital of Espírito Santo, stands as a captivating coastal city in southeastern Brazil. Its unique placement, largely on an island within a bay where several rivers converge with the sea, presents a distinct fusion of urban life and natural splendor. ## A Name Forged in Triumph The city's current name, Vitória (meaning 'Victory' in Portuguese), was adopted following a pivotal battle led by Vasco Fernandes Coutinho, the captaincy holder, against the Goytacaz Amerindians. For centuries, Vitória remained principally a 'city-port,' enduring attacks from various European forces seeking to control its valuable resources like sugar and 'pau-brasil.'

## Modernization and Expansion Vitória formally became a city and provincial capital in 1823. However, its insular nature initially impeded its development. Significant transformations commenced in 1894 with extensive land reclamation in the city's lower areas, driven by the burgeoning coffee trade. These interventions reshaped the island, leading to urbanization, the creation of new neighborhoods, and improved sanitation. The bridge linking the island to the mainland was completed in 1927. After World War II, Vitória emerged as Brazil's foremost iron ore port, and by 1970, its port ascended to become one of the most important in the nation. In 2015, the city was acknowledged by the UN as the second-best city to live in Brazil.

The rainy season typically spans from October to January, with November being the wettest month. For beach activities, February and May are also favorable choices, offering warm conditions with less humidity than the peak rainy season.

Vitória is served by Eurico de Aguiar Salles International Airport (VIX), a modern facility located approximately 10 km (6 miles) from downtown. It provides direct flights to major Brazilian capitals. Public transportation within Vitória primarily consists of an extensive bus network. It is important to note that cash payments are not accepted on buses; you will need a local 'Cartão GV - Bilhete Único Metropolitano.'
