## The Maharaja's Defiance and Chail's Royal Birth Chail's compelling history is inextricably linked to Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. In 1891, a disagreement with the British Viceroy, Lord Kitchener, led to the Maharaja's banishment from Shimla, then the summer capital of British India. This affront to his royal pride spurred the Maharaja to create his own summer retreat, one that would rival Shimla in grandeur and beauty.

He selected Chail, an idyllic spot amidst deodar forests, to establish his new summer capital. In 1891, the magnificent Chail Palace was constructed, displaying regal architecture and intricate wooden interiors. The Maharaja's passion for cricket led to the creation of the Chail Cricket Ground in 1893, famously known as the highest cricket ground in the world, built by leveling a hilltop. He also established a Gurudwara Sahib in 1907, notable for its unique colonial-style architecture.

Beyond these grand constructions, the Maharaja's influence extended to the spiritual landscape of Chail. Legend has it that he abandoned plans for a palace on a particular site after a saint, Sidh Baba, appeared in his dream, revealing the land's sacred nature as his meditation and cremation ground. In reverence, the Maharaja built Sidh Baba Ka Mandir there in 1891. Chail also became home to a wildlife sanctuary, which once served as the Maharaja's hunting grounds. After India's independence, the Patiala royal family donated many of these properties to the Government of India, with the Chail Palace now functioning as a heritage hotel.

Begin your exploration at the Chail Palace, a former royal residence now converted into a heritage hotel. Admire its colonial architecture, expansive lawns, and the regal ambiance. While you can visit the lobby, dining area, bar, and gardens, the private rooms are reserved for guests.

Next, head to the Chail Cricket Ground, recognized as the highest cricket ground in the world. Although it primarily serves the Chail Military School today, the wide-ranging views from this unique sporting arena are captivating.

For a spiritual experience, visit Kali Ka Tibba, a temple dedicated to Goddess Kali, situated atop the highest hill in Chail. It offers sweeping views of the Shivalik Range, including the Choor Chandni peak. Another significant religious site is Sidh Baba Ka Mandir, built on a spot believed to be a saint's meditation ground. The summer months (March to June) are considered ideal, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C, offering a refreshing escape and perfect weather for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Autumn (September to November) also provides clear skies and comfortable temperatures, excellent for enjoying the scenic beauty. If you wish to witness snowfall, winter (December to February) transforms Chail into a picturesque wonderland, with temperatures dropping to between 5°C and -2°C. Monsoons (July to October) bring lush greenery but can also lead to slippery roads and potential landslides, making it less ideal for extensive outdoor exploration.

Chail is well-connected and accessible. The closest airport is Jubbarhatti Airport in Shimla, approximately 62 km away. Kalka Railway Station, on the Ambala-Kalka railway line, is the nearest railhead. From these points, taxis and buses are readily available to reach Chail. Within Chail, local taxis are the primary mode of transport for exploring attractions.

Entry to the Chail Palace costs INR 100 per person, though guests staying at the palace are exempt. The Chail Wildlife Sanctuary generally has no entry fee, or a nominal fee of INR 100 for adults and INR 50 for children. It's advisable to carry warm clothing, especially during evenings and the winter months. While Chail offers a range of accommodation, from heritage hotels to budget-friendly options, booking in advance, particularly during peak season, is recommended.
