About Kovalam

The story of Kovalam

Kovalam, a coastal town in Kerala, India, offers crescent-shaped beaches and a serene atmosphere. The name 'Kovalam' itself signifies 'grove of coconut trees' in Malayalam, a fitting description for the palm-fringed shores that define its landscape. Situated approximately 16 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala's capital city, Kovalam presents a fusion of natural splendor, cultural encounters, and wellness retreats.

This former fishing village has evolved into an internationally recognized destination, drawing visitors seeking repose, Ayurvedic therapies, and a lively coastal existence. With its shallow waters and gentle tidal movements, Kovalam's beaches are favored for swimming and various water activities.

History

From Royal Retreat to Counterculture Crossroads

Kovalam's evolution from a secluded stretch of coast to a prominent destination began in the late 1920s when the Regent Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore built her personal beach resort, the Halcyon Castle, here. Her nephew, the Maharaja of Travancore, subsequently brought the area to public attention. European guests of the Travancore kingdom soon recognized Kovalam's potential as a place for visitors in the 1930s.

The true turning point for Kovalam's international recognition arrived in the early 1970s. During this era, a significant influx of travelers, journeying on their way to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) via the popular 'hippie trail,' discovered Kovalam. This arrival marked the beginning of the transformation of a quiet fishing village into a major destination. Over the decades, Kovalam has continued to evolve, integrating its natural appeal with wellness tourism, particularly Ayurvedic resorts, and a diverse food scene influenced by its international visitors. The region has also maintained its maritime heritage, with the nearby Vizhinjam serving as a historically significant port.

Vizhinjam: An Ancient Port's Legacy

Just 3 kilometers from Kovalam, Vizhinjam holds a deep history dating back to ancient times, serving as one of Kerala's oldest port settlements. It was once under the rule of the Ay dynasty, which flourished between the 7th and 11th centuries, and later witnessed conflicts between powerful dynasties like the Kulashekharas and the Cholas. Archaeological findings indicate that Vizhinjam was a bustling port city with trade links to Roman merchants and later to European traders. Today, the Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour remains a vital hub, offering a window into the authentic coastal life and traditional fishing methods that have been practiced for centuries.

What to see

Kovalam offers a range of experiences, from its celebrated beaches to cultural insights. The coastline features three distinct crescent-shaped beaches: Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach (also known as Eve's Beach), and Samudra Beach, each with its own character. Lighthouse Beach is the most active, named for the iconic Vizhinjam Lighthouse that stands on Kurumkal Hill. Visitors can ascend the spiral staircase of the red and white striped lighthouse for expansive views of the coastline and the Arabian Sea.

Hawa Beach, adjacent to Lighthouse Beach, offers a calmer atmosphere, often utilized by local fishing communities in the mornings. Samudra Beach is the most tranquil of the three, bordered by Ayurvedic resorts. Beyond the beaches, explore the Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave Temple, an 18th-century Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, which reflects India's cultural heritage. For a glimpse into local life, visit the Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour to observe traditional fishing methods and the daily rhythm of the village. You can also discover local crafts, including coconut shell products and wood carvings, in markets and galleries.

When to visit

The most agreeable time to visit Kovalam is during the winter months, from September to March. Temperatures during this period are pleasant, ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for beach activities and exploration. This is considered the peak tourist season. The shoulder seasons of March to May and October to November also offer good conditions with quieter beaches and agreeable weather. While the monsoon season (June to September) brings heavy rainfall and high humidity, it is considered an ideal time for Ayurvedic treatments due to the verdant surroundings and fewer crowds, and offers opportunities for discounted rates on accommodation.

Practical

Kovalam is easily reached, situated approximately 15-17 kilometers from Trivandrum International Airport and Trivandrum Central Railway Station. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are readily available from both the airport and railway station, with ride-sharing options like Uber also present. When on the beaches, remember that consuming liquor is restricted, and not all beach shacks serve alcohol. The sea can have strong currents, so exercise caution while swimming and heed lifeguard warnings. For local currency needs, ATMs are available around Kovalam Junction, a short walk from the main beach. The junction also offers supermarkets and grocery stores for daily necessities. While on the main tourist beaches, wearing bikinis and swim shorts is generally acceptable, but it's important to remember that India is a modest country.
