О Lacock

История Lacock

Lacock, a village in Wiltshire, England, offers a palpable journey into the past. With its precise grid of four main streets, the village has preserved much of its original character, many buildings standing since the 18th century or earlier. Almost entirely under the stewardship of the National Trust, Lacock's untouched appearance has made it a sought-after backdrop for film and television productions, including Pride and Prejudice, Downton Abbey, and the Harry Potter films.

Beyond its cinematic allure, Lacock holds profound significance in the chronicle of photography. It was the residence of William Henry Fox Talbot, who conceived the photographic negative in the early 19th century. The village also contains Lacock Abbey, a country house erected upon the foundations of a 13th-century nunnery, which now houses the Fox Talbot Museum.

История

## From Saxon Settlement to Augustinian Nunnery Lacock's origins trace back to Saxon times, when settlers named it 'Lacuc' after the 'little stream' (Bide Brook) flowing through it. The village appears in the Domesday Book of 1086, with a recorded population of 160–190, alongside two mills and a vineyard.

In 1232, Ela, Countess of Salisbury, a formidable woman who also served as Sheriff of Wiltshire, established Lacock Abbey as an Augustinian nunnery. The village and its lands formed part of the Abbey's endowment. Ela herself became the Abbess of Lacock in 1240. The Abbey flourished throughout the Middle Ages, largely due to its successful wool industry, supported by a flock of up to 2,000 sheep. A weekly market was granted in 1242, and an annual fair from the 1250s, further solidifying Lacock's economic standing.

## Dissolution and a New Era With the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, Lacock Abbey and its estate, including the village, were sold to William Sharington. Sharington transformed the nunnery into a private residence, and the property later passed to the Talbot family through marriage. The village's appearance largely settled during the 18th century, with most of its surviving houses dating from this period or earlier.

## The Birth of Photography Lacock's most profound contribution to global history emerged with William Henry Fox Talbot, who inherited Lacock Abbey and resided there from 1800 to 1877. A polymath with interests spanning various sciences, Talbot's experiments at the Abbey led to his revolutionary invention of the photographic negative in 1835. This innovation laid the groundwork for modern photography. In 1944, Matilda Talbot, a niece of Henry Fox Talbot, bequeathed the Abbey and most of the village to the National Trust, ensuring its careful preservation for future generations.

## Modern Day Lacock Today, Lacock continues to draw visitors with its unspoiled character. Its well-preserved streets and buildings have made it a preferred location for numerous film and television productions. The village maintains a population of approximately 1,073 as of 2024. The National Trust actively manages the village and Abbey, offering visitors a window into centuries of English history and the genesis of a revolutionary art form.

Что посмотреть

Begin your exploration at Lacock Abbey, a country house built on the foundations of a 13th-century nunnery. Wander through its medieval cloisters and discover the very window where William Henry Fox Talbot captured the first photographic negative. Within the Abbey grounds, the Fox Talbot Museum delves into the history of photography, showcasing early photographic technology and the life of its inventor. The museum also hosts changing photography exhibitions.

Walk through Lacock village, admiring the timber-framed cottages and historic stone buildings that line its streets. The village itself is a living film set, recognizable from productions like Harry Potter and Downton Abbey. Do not miss the 14th-century Tithe Barn, a remnant of the Abbey's agricultural past. For a moment of quiet reflection, visit St. Cyriac's Church, which dates back to the Norman period.

Enjoy a meal or a drink at one of Lacock's historic pubs, such as The George Inn or The Red Lion, both offering a window into centuries of hospitality. For a lighter bite, the Stables Café and Courtyard Tea-room provide refreshments. The village also has independent shops, including the Lacock Bakery and the Lacock Village Shop and Deli, where you can find local treats and souvenirs.

Когда посетить

Lacock presents an inviting experience throughout the year. Spring and summer offer verdant gardens and extended daylight hours for exploring the village and Abbey grounds. The Abbey's main rooms are typically open from March to October. During the colder months (November to February), the main Abbey rooms are closed, though the grounds, museum, and shop generally remain accessible, often with adjusted hours. Consulting the National Trust website for specific opening times before your visit is recommended.

Практическая информация

Lacock is situated approximately 3 miles south of Chippenham, Wiltshire, and about 30 minutes from Bath. If driving, take Junction 17 from the M4 motorway and follow the A350. There is a spacious National Trust car park on the edge of the village (SN15 2RQ), which is complimentary for National Trust members and costs £5 for non-members. It is advisable to park here, as village roads are narrow and parking is limited. Electric vehicle charging points are available in the car park.

For those using public transport, Chippenham and Melksham have train stations, with bus routes (Faresaver X34) connecting to Lacock. The village is easily walkable, and many areas are welcoming to pedestrians. Accessible toilets are available in the Abbey courtyard and by the Stables Café. Mobility scooters, mountain trikes, and manual wheelchairs can be borrowed without charge from visitor reception for use in the Abbey grounds, though advance booking is recommended.
