Uzerche

Uzerche, affectionately termed the "Pearl of the Limousin" by English writer Arthur Young in 1787, occupies a rocky spur gazing over a bend in the Vézère River. This fortified settlement within the Corrèze department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region offers passage through centuries of time, revealed in its medieval architecture and evocative setting.

Designated a "Village étape" since 1996 and included among the "100 Plus Beaux Détours de France" since 2010, Uzerche extends an invitation to explore. Its skyline, distinguished by numerous towers, arched passages, and ancient dwellings resembling small castles, inspires the local adage, "He who owns a house in Uzerche has a castle in the Limousin."

From Gaulish Settlement to Medieval Stronghold

Uzerche’s strategic location at the convergence of ancient trade routes and its defensible position on a rocky outcrop above the Vézère River have sculpted its enduring narrative. Gaulish tribes established themselves here as early as the 2nd century BCE, and it is said to be the final location where the Gauls confronted Julius Caesar in 51 BCE.

Between the 5th and 8th centuries, Uzerche blossomed into a significant administrative, religious, and political center. Its defenses allowed it to repel numerous assaults, earning it the epithet "Uzerche la pucelle" (Uzerche the maiden) for never having been conquered. A notable episode was the seven-year Saracen siege in the 8th century, famously broken when the town’s starving inhabitants outwitted their besiegers by releasing their last two well-fed cows.

In the 10th century, a powerful Benedictine monastery was founded with the consent of both the pope and the king, growing into a thriving center during the 12th and 13th centuries. The town developed around this monastery, and the abbey's 100 monks were vassals of the abbot, who in turn was a vassal of the king. The Abbey Church of Saint-Pierre, with its distinctive octagonal bell tower, remains a remarkable example of Limousin Romanesque artistry.

During the Hundred Years' War, Uzerche’s church was fortified, and in 1374, after repelling an English assault, the town was granted the privilege of adding three royal lilies to its coat of arms. The town continued to gain favor among French nobility, who constructed numerous fortresses, towers, and turrets, contributing to Uzerche’s unique architectural character.

Begin your journey at the Porte Bécharie, the sole remaining of the nine 14th-century fortified gateways that once guarded the town. From there, wander through the narrow, winding streets to uncover Uzerche's medieval and Renaissance architecture, including stone facades, dignified towers, and arched passages.

The 11th-century Abbey Church of Saint-Pierre stands as a focal point, displaying Limousin Romanesque artistry with its octagonal bell tower and one of the region's most ancient crypts. You can explore the church, its crypt, and the serene gardens beyond. Nearby, on Place des Vignerons, rises the 14th-century Black Prince's Tower.

Other notable structures include Bécharie Castle, a 15th-century defensive complex adorned with frescoes, and the 17th-century Tayac House with its distinctive pepper-pot tower. For sweeping views of the town and the Vézère River, ascend to the Esplanade de la Lunade. The cultural center, housed in a revitalized former paper mill, provides a space for street art and various cultural gatherings.

The most agreeable weather in Uzerche typically occurs from May through September, with comfortable temperatures ranging from 20°C to 26°C (68°F to 79°F). July is generally the warmest month, with an average high of 24°C (75°F) and the clearest skies. Precipitation is lowest in July, making it ideal for outdoor pursuits. The summer months also bring various celebrations and events, including a classical music festival and evening pétanque competitions in August.

Uzerche is situated in the Corrèze department, approximately 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from Tulle and 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) from Brive-la-Gaillarde. Limoges is less than an hour away, and Limoges airport provides regular flights to the UK. The town is accessible via the A20 autoroute. The local tourist office, Terres de Corrèze, located at 10 Place de la Libération, can furnish maps and information on heritage trails, the Vézère meander trail, and a route highlighting connections with Simone de Beauvoir.
