From Ancient Olous to Venetian Fortifications

The history of Elounda stretches back to Minoan times, with its earliest recorded settlement being the ancient Greek city of Olous. Olous was a significant Dorian city, at one point supporting a population of over 30,000 inhabitants and minting its own currency. It was a prosperous port city, strategically located on a maritime crossroads, and engaged in trade, maritime affairs, and even the production of colors from crushed shells. The city flourished through Classical and pre-Byzantine times, with evidence of temples dedicated to deities like Britomartis and Zeus Tallaios. Around the 2nd century AD, or possibly due to a large earthquake around 780 AD, much of Olous was submerged, and its ruins are still visible beneath the waters of Elounda Bay.

During the second half of the 13th century, the Venetians arrived, leaving a significant mark on the region. They constructed salt pans, which were crucial for salt production and export to Europe, and began rebuilding the fortress on Spinalonga. Spinalonga, originally fortified by the Cretans to protect Olous, became an impregnable Venetian fortress in the 16th century. The Ottomans later captured Spinalonga in 1715, making it a Turkish settlement.

A Colony of Resilience and a Filming Location

A poignant chapter in Elounda's history centers around Spinalonga. From 1903 until 1957, the island served as a leper colony, isolating those afflicted with the disease from the rest of Greece. The story of Spinalonga as a leper colony gained international recognition through Victoria Hislop's bestselling novel "The Island," which was later adapted into a popular Greek television series. This period of the island's past illuminates the resilience of its inhabitants and the societal perceptions of leprosy at the time.

In the early 20th century, between 1928 and 1939, Elounda Bay also played a role in early aviation, serving as a landing and refueling station for British Imperial Airways seaplanes on their routes to India. The area's scenic beauty also attracted the attention of filmmakers; the popular British novelist Mary Stewart lived in Elounda for about a year and wrote "The Moon-Spinners," which was filmed in the village in 1963 by Walt Disney, bringing international publicity to Elounda. In 1964, Elounda was officially registered as a tourist area by royal decree, paving the way for its transformation into a prominent tourist destination from the 1970s onwards. The development of luxury resorts from the 1990s further cemented Elounda's reputation as a high-end travel spot.

A visit to Elounda offers a blend of historical exploration and seaside enjoyment. The most iconic excursion is a boat trip to Spinalonga Island, a former Venetian fortress and later a leper colony. You can explore its well-preserved ruins and learn about its multi-layered history. Boats depart frequently from Elounda's port, and also from the nearby fishing village of Plaka.

For a unique historical experience, explore the sunken city of Olous. Visible remnants of this ancient Dorian city can be seen just beneath the surface of the Elounda lagoon, particularly around the causeway leading to the Kolokytha Peninsula. It's a popular spot for snorkeling and offers a tangible connection to Elounda's deep past.

The Kolokytha Peninsula itself is worth exploring for its hiking trails, small chapels, and the secluded Kolokytha Beach, ideal for a calm day by the sea. Along the road to the peninsula, you'll also find the Venetian salt pans, which operated until 1972 and are now a habitat for migratory birds. The main Elounda village offers a charming port with fishing boats, local tavernas, and cafes. A short drive away is Agios Nikolaos, a lively town known for its picturesque Lake Voulismeni and active marina.

Elounda enjoys a Mediterranean climate, characterized by long, hot summers and mild winters. The best time to visit for warm, sunny weather and ideal conditions for swimming and outdoor activities is between May and September. During these months, temperatures range comfortably from 22°C to 30°C, with minimal rainfall. For those who prefer cooler temperatures, March to April offers mild weather. Sea temperatures are pleasantly warm for beach activities from June to November.

Elounda is easily accessible, located about 78 km east of Heraklion, approximately a 70-minute drive. From Agios Nikolaos, it's a short 11 km drive, taking about 15 minutes. Public bus services (KTEL Lasithi) connect Elounda to Agios Nikolaos several times daily during the season, with connections from Heraklion requiring a change in Agios Nikolaos. Taxis are also readily available.

While Elounda is recognized for its luxury resorts, the village itself offers a range of accommodation options, including apartments at standard eastern Crete prices. Boats to Spinalonga depart from Elounda's harbor every 30-40 minutes from 10 am, with the last return around 5:30-6 pm. The crossing takes about 15 minutes. Alternatively, a shorter, 5-minute ferry ride to Spinalonga is available from the nearby village of Plaka.

Car rental is available for exploring the wider region. For those exploring Spinalonga, comfortable shoes and water are recommended, and it's advisable to allow 1-2 hours for the visit. While picnicking is not permitted inside the Spinalonga fortress, there are areas outside for this purpose.
