Mỹ Tho, the capital city of Tiền Giang Province, serves as a significant doorway to the Mekong Delta, approximately 75 kilometers southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Situated on the northern bank of the Mekong (Tien) River, this city offers a blend of lively river life and a glimpse into traditional Vietnamese culture.

Once a modest fishing village, Mỹ Tho has developed into an important commercial center, while still retaining its authentic character. It's a popular starting point for exploring the Mekong Delta's intricate waterways, verdant islands, and lively local markets.

The city's name itself, "Mỹ Tho," translates to "beautiful reed," reflecting the natural landscape that once defined the area. Visitors can expect a consistently warm and humid tropical climate throughout the year, with daily maximum temperatures often exceeding 30°C.

From Khmer Lands to French Stronghold

Mỹ Tho's origins trace back to the 1680s when Chinese refugees, fleeing the fall of the Southern Ming dynasty to the Qing in 1683, established a settlement. At that time, the area was part of the Khmer Empire before being annexed by Vietnam in the 18th century. By the 17th century, Mỹ Tho had already become a significant commercial hub in Southern Vietnam, thanks to its strategic location on the Mekong River.

During the French colonial period in the 1860s, Mỹ Tho emerged as a major strategic city, alongside Saigon. Its capture by France in 1862 was a pivotal moment, marking the establishment of the French colony of Cochinchina and ushering in nearly a century of French dominance in Vietnam. This period brought prosperity, attracting a large number of migrants, primarily from Teochew and Minnan in mainland China, further shaping the city's cultural and economic identity.

In 1876, Mỹ Tho province was officially established as one of six provinces in southeast Vietnam. The city also played a pioneering role in transportation, featuring Vietnam's first railway route, a 70-kilometer line connecting Saigon and Mỹ Tho, which began operating in 1885. However, this railway was destroyed during the Vietnam War in the 1960s. Mỹ Tho was also the subject of "The Lesson," a chapter in Tobias Wolff's memoir In Pharaoh's Army: Memories of the Lost War, which describes events during the 1968 Tet Offensive.

Recognized as a first-grade urban area in the Mekong Delta in 2015, Mỹ Tho continues to thrive, with its economy primarily driven by tourism, fishing, and agricultural products such as coconuts, bananas, and longans. Although it ceased to exist as a municipal city on July 1, 2025, following the elimination of district-level units in Vietnam, its historical and cultural significance endures.

Begin with a traditional sampan ride along the Mekong River, navigating through scenic canals lined with coconut palms. These boat trips often include stops at the four mythical islands: Dragon (Long), Unicorn (Lan), Turtle (Quy), and Phoenix (Phung), each offering unique insights into local life.

Thới Sơn Island, also known as Unicorn Island, is the largest and a popular stop. Here, you can explore local workshops, sample fresh tropical fruits directly from orchards, enjoy honey tea, and listen to traditional Southern Vietnamese folk music. Many tours also include a visit to a coconut candy village, where you can observe the traditional candy-making process.

On land, the Vinh Trang Pagoda is a prominent attraction. Built in 1849, this sprawling complex showcases a unique blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, Khmer, and European architectural styles. Its serene gardens and giant Buddha statues offer a peaceful retreat.

For a different kind of experience, consider visiting the Dong Tam Snake Farm, located about 9-12 kilometers from Mỹ Tho city center. This facility is a major center for raising and preserving various snake species, conducting research, producing medicine, and treating snakebites. It also features a snake museum, recognized by the Vietnam Record Association as the largest in the country.

Do not miss the Mỹ Tho Market, a lively traditional market where you can find an array of fresh tropical fruits, seafood, and local street food like hủ tiếu Mỹ Tho (a type of rice noodle soup).

Mỹ Tho experiences a tropical climate with consistently warm temperatures year-round, typically ranging from 23°C to 33.6°C. The key factor in planning your visit is the seasonal rainfall.

The dry season, from December to April, offers the most comfortable weather with minimal rainfall and clearer skies, making it ideal for outdoor activities and boat trips. February is particularly dry. The period from late January to March is also considered the spring or flower season, providing a pleasant atmosphere for strolling around.

The wet season runs from May to November, bringing lush landscapes but also occasional heavy rainfall. However, the fruit blooming season from June to July offers an abundance of fresh local fruits, and the floating season (July to September) presents spectacular scenery with higher water levels.

Getting to Mỹ Tho is straightforward, as it's easily accessible from Ho Chi Minh City, approximately 70-75 kilometers away. Many daily buses run from the Mien Tay bus station in Saigon.

While some tourist establishments may accept US dollars, the official currency is Vietnamese Dong (VND). It's more convenient to have local currency for smaller purchases, street food, and market visits. ATMs are widely available, and currency exchange services can be found at banks and hotels.

Given the year-round hot and humid tropical climate, pack light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen. A hat, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen are essential for sun protection. Comfortable sandals or light sneakers are recommended, especially for exploring by foot or boat. Insect repellent is also advisable, particularly for evening walks near the water. English is increasingly spoken by locals, offering opportunities for cultural exchange.
