Plön, the district seat of the Plön district in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, is a town intimately shaped by water. It sits directly on the shores of the Great Plön Lake (Großer Plöner See), the largest lake in Schleswig-Holstein, and is encircled by several smaller lakes. From Slavic Fortress to Ducal Residence

The history of Plön traces back to the 10th century with a Slavic defensive fortification called Plune, located on the island of Olsborg in Lake Plön. This early settlement, whose name meant 'ice-free water,' was destroyed in 1139 by Count Adolf II of Schauenburg, marking the end of Slavic influence in the region. A new castle was established on the Bischofsberg, the site of the present Plön Castle, by the 12th century. Under the protection of this castle, a Saxon market town slowly emerged, eventually receiving town rights under Lübeck law in 1236.

Plön's strategic location on a narrow isthmus between its lakes and the River Schwentine made it a significant center for the County of Holstein. From 1561 to 1729, Plön served as the capital of the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön, which emerged from a succession within the Danish royal house. The current Renaissance-style Plön Castle was commissioned by Duke Joachim Ernst during the Thirty Years' War and completed in just three years, between 1633 and 1636. Upon Frederick Charles's death without male heirs in 1761, the duchy reverted to the Danish crown, and Plön remained under Danish rule until the Second Schleswig War in 1864. After falling into Prussian hands, Plön Castle was transformed into a military academy in 1868, serving this purpose until the end of World War I. Notably, the sons of German Emperor William II were educated here. During the Nazi era, it became a National Political Institute of Education. Remarkably, the castle survived both World Wars without damage. From 1946 to 2001, it functioned as a state boarding school.
