The name Seillans itself may derive from these early settlers, the Sayllens, or perhaps from the Greek goddess Selene or a Roman knight named Selenus. Romans certainly established foundations in the nearby plain, and later, during the medieval period, the village grew into a fortified hilltop settlement.

Defensive ramparts and a feudal castle were constructed in the 12th century to protect against incursions. A notable remnant of these fortifications is the Porte Sarrasine, or Saracen Gate, a stone gateway named for its spiked portcullis, which served as a primary entrance to the walled village. The 11th-century Saint Léger church, rebuilt over the years, particularly in the 15th century, stands at the village's highest point.

Artistic and Economic Flourishing

In the 19th century, Seillans experienced economic growth through the establishment of perfumeries in the surrounding hills, though these operations ceased in 2010. This period marked a connection to the nearby town of Grasse, celebrated for its perfume production. The village has long attracted artisans, and in the 20th century, it became a sanctuary for artists.

Surrealist painter Max Ernst and his wife Dorothea Tanning made Seillans their dwelling from 1964 until Ernst's passing in 1976. The Maison Waldberg in Place du Thouron now exhibits a substantial collection of Ernst's graphic works. Other artists, including Stan Appenzeller, also found inspiration in Seillans, with some of their paintings displayed in the Tourist Office. During these months, temperatures are generally agreeable, and there is less rain, making it ideal for exploring the village and its surroundings. July and August are the warmest months, with average daytime highs around 29°C (84°F), suitable for warm-weather activities. May, June, July, August, and September are particularly recommended for comfortable conditions. The village also hosts various events and festivals throughout the year, with the international Musique-Cordiale Festival taking place each August.

Seillans is located in the Var department and can be reached via the D562 road from Grasse or Draguignan, or the D19 which connects it to neighboring villages in the Fayence region. Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport is approximately 40 miles away. For those arriving by car, free parking is available below the village, as the medieval center is accessible only on foot.

The Pays de Fayence Tourist Office, located at Maison Waldberg in Place du Thouron, provides helpful information for visitors, including maps and details on guided tours. The village has essential amenities, including a small supermarket, bakery, pharmacy, bank, post office, and several restaurants. A weekly market is held on Wednesdays.
