About Jianshui

The story of Jianshui

Jianshui, a historic town in southern Yunnan Province, China, offers a journey through over 1,200 years of history. Once a significant cultural and political center, it was known as Huili City during the Nanzhao State, and later Lin'an. Today, Jianshui is celebrated for its well-preserved ancient architecture, traditional craftsmanship, and distinctive local cuisine.

The town is often called a 'Museum of Ancient Buildings and Residential Houses' due to its more than 50 well-maintained ancient structures, showcasing a blend of Han and local ethnic styles. Unlike some of Yunnan's more bustling ancient towns, Jianshui maintains a more relaxed pace, inviting visitors to wander its stone-paved alleys and experience a traditional way of life.

Beyond the ancient town itself, Jianshui's surrounding areas offer equally compelling sights, from the engineering marvel of the Double Dragon Bridge to the remarkably preserved Tuanshan Village. The town's reputation for purple pottery and grilled tofu further enriches the experience, offering a blend of history and local flavor that captivates culture and history enthusiasts.

History

From Huili to Jianshui: A Millennia of Transformation

The history of Jianshui stretches back over 1,200 years, with its origins in the Nanzhao State (738-937 AD). Around 810 AD, the Nanzhao State established Huili City here, a name that means 'vast sea' in the Yi language. This settlement quickly became a vital trading link between Kunming and the regions to its south and southeast, a role it maintained through the subsequent Kingdom of Dali, and the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties.

Under Mongol rule during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), the government established Jianshui Zhou in 1276, marking the first appearance of the name 'Jianshui' in historical records. This period also saw Han immigrants from central China settling in the area through military farming, initiating early cultural exchanges with the local Yi and Hani peoples. The Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) brought another name change to Lin'an Fu, and Jianshui flourished as a center of Confucian learning. The construction of its grand Confucius Temple, one of the largest and best-preserved in China, stands as a testament to this intellectual prosperity.

In 1382, Lin'an Prefecture was established, and Jianshui became the regional hub of southern Yunnan, with its present-day city layout largely taking shape during this era. The imposing Chaoyang Tower, built in 1389 as the eastern gate of the ancient town, is a prominent surviving structure from this period. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the area was renamed Jianshui County. Jianshui has remarkably retained much of its classical architecture, including over 15 ancient buildings from more than 12 centuries of construction. This enduring architectural heritage, alongside its purple pottery tradition dating back over a thousand years, highlights Jianshui's deep cultural roots and prosperity.

What to see

Jianshui's ancient core and surrounding areas are a treasure trove of historical and cultural sights. Begin at the Jianshui Confucius Temple, the second-largest Confucius Temple in China. Dating back over 700 years, its traditional Chinese architecture, tranquil ponds, and ancient pavilions offer a glimpse into Confucian philosophy and its lasting influence.

Another highlight is the Zhu Family Garden, a sprawling Qing Dynasty complex with over 200 rooms, elegant courtyards, and intricate wood carvings. This private mansion is a prime example of traditional Chinese residential design.

The Chaoyang Tower, often likened to a 'Small Tiananmen Tower' due to its similar appearance, was built in 1389 and served as the eastern gate of the ancient town. It remains an iconic landmark.

Just outside the town, the Double Dragon Bridge (also known as Shuanglong Bridge) is a 17-arched stone bridge and an engineering marvel from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Its elegant design, with three Chinese-style pavilions, blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

Further afield, Tuanshan Village, about 13 kilometers west of Jianshui, is a remarkably preserved traditional village. It features grand family mansions, gardens, and temples with beautiful engravings, offering a glimpse into 19th-century life.
