About Berkeley

The story of Berkeley

Berkeley, California, is a city that defies easy categorization. Situated on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, it's a place where academic rigor from the University of California, Berkeley, intertwines with a legacy of social activism and a thriving culinary scene. The city, named after the 18th-century Anglo-Irish bishop and philosopher George Berkeley, offers a singular blend of intellectual energy, artistic expression, and a deep connection to nature.

From its tree-lined streets to its bustling commercial districts, Berkeley presents a multifaceted experience. It's a city that embraces diversity, evident in its varied neighborhoods and the international flair brought by its university community. Whether you're drawn to its historical significance, its flourishing arts, or its innovative food culture, Berkeley promises a visit that is both engaging and thought-provoking.

History

From Ohlone Land to Academic Hub

Before European colonization, the Berkeley area was home to the Chochenyo-speaking Ohlone people, who managed the abundant natural resources of the East Bay. They built shellmounds, including one at the mouth of Strawberry Creek.

The mid-19th century brought significant change with the California Gold Rush, leading to a surge in population. A small community of settlers established 'Ocean View' in 1853. In 1866, the College of California, looking for a new campus, chose the area and named the emerging town 'Berkeley' after Bishop George Berkeley. The University of California was chartered in 1868, taking over the College of California's assets, and the UC Berkeley campus officially opened in 1873.

Berkeley was incorporated as a town in 1878, and its population grew rapidly. The Central Pacific Railroad's branch line into downtown Berkeley in 1876 spurred commercial development. The devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake led to another population boom, as thousands of refugees crossed the Bay, including many artists who formed one of the largest art colonies west of Chicago.

The early 20th century saw Berkeley transform from a rural town into an urban community. The city implemented single-family zoning in 1916, a measure described as the first of its kind in the United States, which had the effect of keeping minorities out of white neighborhoods. The Great Depression impacted Berkeley, though the university helped mitigate some of the economic hardship.

The 1960s marked a pivotal era, with UC Berkeley becoming a focal point for political activism and the Free Speech Movement. This period cemented Berkeley's reputation as a center for progressive thought and social change. Today, Berkeley continues to evolve, known for its contributions to science, its arts and culture scene, and its commitment to environmental sustainability.
