About Stockerau

The story of Stockerau

Stockerau, often called the "gateway to the Weinviertel," is the largest town in this wine region of Lower Austria. Situated approximately 25 kilometers northwest of Vienna, it offers a blend of historical character, natural beauty, and modern amenities. Flanked to the south by the Danube floodplains and to the north by gently rolling farmland, Stockerau provides a tranquil escape with easy access to the bustling capital.

The town's character is defined by its substantial floodplain forests, historic architecture, and a lively cultural scene. From the soaring steeple of St. Stephen's Parish Church to the revitalized Belvedereschlössl, Stockerau invites exploration. Its strategic location near the Danube also makes it a popular starting point for cycling and hiking adventures, connecting visitors to the wider Lower Austrian landscape.

History

From Neolithic Settlements to City Status

The history of Stockerau stretches back to the Neolithic period, with archaeological finds confirming early human settlement in the area. The town's recorded history begins in 1012, the year it was first mentioned in official records. This same year is significant for the martyrdom of Saint Koloman in the local "Au" forest, an event that is still referenced in the town's coat of arms, which depicts a tree growing from a decaying stump as a reminder of its founders and the saint.

Stockerau gained market rights in 1465, a crucial step in its development as a regional center. The 19th century brought significant changes, with the opening of the railway line to Vienna in 1841. This new connection greatly boosted local industry and commerce. By 1893, Stockerau's growth and importance were formally recognized when it was elevated to city status.

Throughout its history, Stockerau has maintained its connection to the Danube River and its surrounding natural landscapes. The Stockerauer Au, a riverside forest, has long served as an important recreational area. While the construction of the Greifenstein Danube power plant in 1984 led to noticeable changes in the landscape and ecosystem, efforts have been made to preserve its natural value, with the area being designated a nature reserve since 1994. Stockerau is also known as "Lenaustadt" due to the poet Nikolaus Lenau spending his youth there.

What to see

Begin your exploration at the Parish Church of St. Stephan, whose 88-meter steeple is the highest church tower in Lower Austria, offering a prominent landmark visible from afar. The church itself is a late Baroque masterpiece. Just a short walk away, discover the Belvedereschlössl, a charming 16th-century castle that now serves as Stockerau's cultural center and houses the district museum.
